Last chance to discover the Watchers of York before the city-wide trail ends

Time is running out to experience York’s unique city-wide trail, with the Watchers of York sculpture trail coming to a close on 31 August 2026.

Produced by Make It York in collaboration with York Minster, the free sculpture trail has transformed the city this summer, inviting visitors to discover twelve striking sculptures hidden among York’s streets, riversides, green spaces and historic landmarks.

Inspired by the medieval stone carvings that have watched over York Minster for centuries, each Watcher has been reimagined by a talented artist as a unique guardian with its own story, personality and connection to the city.

From hidden corners to iconic locations, the trail has encouraged thousands of people to explore York from a fresh perspective, uncovering the stories behind each sculpture while celebrating the city’s heritage, creativity and community spirit.

With just three weeks remaining before the Watchers leave their city locations, now is the perfect time to complete the trail, discover your favourite guardian or experience it for the very first time.

Free trail maps are available from the Visit York Visitor Information Centre, at 28 Back Swinegate, making it easy for everyone to join the adventure before it ends on 31 August.

There is still time to own one of York’s most distinctive artworks. The Watchers of York Auction gives bidders one final opportunity to take home a unique sculpture inspired by York’s rich heritage. Place your bid before 10 September at: visityork.org/watchers-auction.

The end of the trail will culminate in the Final Gathering, from 3 to 13 September, where visitors will have the rare opportunity to see all twelve Watcher sculptures reunited in the magnificent surroundings of York Minster’s Chapter House before they move on to their permanent homes.
