It has today (26th January 2021) been announced that York  has been recognised in the 2021 Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best awards for World’s Top Trending Destination, ranking 22nd in the world.

This category recognises destinations that saw the biggest increase in positive ratings and reviews over the last year, meaning they actually grew in popularity during the pandemic. Elsewhere, Cabo San Lucas in Mexico tops the world list, while Corsica in France and Doha in Qatar, take second and third place respectively.

Throughout a challenging year, York stood out to travelers and provided an amazing experience despite unprecedented circumstances. Based on a full year of Tripadvisor reviews, award winners represent travellers’ ultimate favorites around the globe.

Sean Bullick, Managing Director of Make It York said, “We are delighted that York has been recognised at this international level in awards which are based on the ratings and reviews of visitors themselves. This recognition is a testament to the fantastic range of local businesses we have in the city that have consistently been going above and beyond to adapt to the shifting circumstances of the pandemic and provide top quality, safe visitor experiences in line with the changing tier restrictions over the last few months.

“York’s unique offer – which combines culture and heritage with world-class hospitality, attractions and retail, is what makes it really stand out as a visitor destination and we look forward to being able to welcome visitors and residents safely back into the city to experience York again when the current lockdown restrictions are lifted.”

“Congratulations to all the winners of the 2021 Travellers’ Choice Awards,” said Kanika Soni, Chief Commercial Officer at Tripadvisor. “I know the past year has been extremely challenging for tourism businesses. What has impressed me is how businesses adapted to these challenges, implementing new cleanliness measures, adding social distancing guidelines, and utilizing technology to prioritize guest safety. The Travelers’ Choice Awards highlight the places that delighted guests more than any others in the past year even as they navigated changing customer expectations and new ways of working. Based on a full year of reviews from customers who visited, this award speaks to the exemplary service and experience you provided guests in the midst of a pandemic.”
