The latest travel advice

The Government has published its coronavirus action plan, which sets out what the health and social care
system across the UK has done to tackle the coronavirus outbreak, and what it plans to do next. The document sets out:

  • What we know about the virus and the diseases it causes.
  • How the UK prepares for infectious disease outbreaks.
  • The UK’s response to the current coronavirus outbreak.

The document can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-action-plan

We are currently in the “delay” phase, which means business as usual for the vast majority of people.

The risk to individuals living and working in York is low and the city remains very much open for business.

We are confident that all the specialist services in the city and county are prepared and robust infection control measures are in place.

The government has updated its guidance to assist employers and businesses in providing advice to staff on:

  • the coronavirus, COVID-19
  • how to help prevent the spread of all respiratory infections including COVID-19
  • what to do if someone with suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19 has been in a workplace
    setting
  • what advice to give to individuals who have travelled to specific areas, as outlined by the
Chief Medical Officer (full list is available here)
  • advice for the certification of absence from work resulting from COVID-19.

Advice for businesses

The Chancellor has set out a £12 billion package of temporary, timely and targeted measures to support public services, individuals and businesses through the economic disruption caused by COVID-19. The budget made it clear that funding will be available for businesses in relation to coronavirus. The following advice is available on the City of York Council website in relation to business rates relief.

There is also ACAS advice for employers and employees which may be helpful.

Keep us updated

We are gathering as much information as we can about the impact of COVID-19 on businesses so please send us your case studies/feedback to business@makeityork.com so we can share this intelligence with our partners on a local, regional and national level.

Tourism Businesses specifically:

The latest updates via VisitBritain will be posted on the Visit York site here

Keep us updated

There are anecdotal reports of cancellations across the UK and there is an awareness that other markets may begin to become more wary of travelling if the situation escalates. With this in mind, both we and VisitEngland/VisitBritain would be grateful if you keep us updated on the impact on your business.

If you are receiving cancellations related to the coronavirus or feeling the impact upon your business please do feed this back to us via email membership@makeityork.com. We will then pass this intelligence onto the local, regional and national level. Importantly, this means that we can inform VisitBritain and DCMS so they can continue to feed in tourism concerns to Government.
