#LoveYork campaign launched by Make It York

A new celebratory #LoveYork campaign has been launched by Make It York this month to champion the city’s unique offer and promote York’s diverse range of indie businesses and attractions. With a focus on ‘shopping local’, the campaign will put a spotlight on some of York’s best businesses and celebrate their unique stories.

The campaign includes a new number of new initiatives, competitions and awards designed to engage residents, businesses and virtual ‘visitors’ to the city during lockdown and beyond. The new #LoveYork hub will also promote the virtual ‘York At Home’ experiences available in the city alongside the takeaway and online delivery options York businesses are promoting.

Kicking off the activity a new ‘LoveYork virtual market’ went live this week – promoting the online products, gift vouchers and offers from a wide range of York businesses. With over 35 local traders, retailers, hotels and attractions currently on site, the platform offers a diverse selection of products from York’s array of independent businesses.

A new online #KidsLoveYork hub for children has also been launched on visityork.org today (13th January 2021) – filled with fun activities, crafts and recipes from organisations across the city. From learning how to craft a Viking helmet, to making prehistoric cheese and creating sock puppets, the hub contains a wide variety of interactive activities for kids of all ages to help keep them entertained during lockdown – and learn more about York!

The new online resource brings together content from some of the city’s best family-friendly attractions such as the National Railway Museum, JORVIK Group and York Museums Trust – alongside hands-on ‘Discovery Zone’ activities from the University of York’s Festival of Ideas. Children can discover the maths behind the railway revolution, design a museum window or learn how to braid with a Viking – all from the comfort of their own home.

The campaign will include a series of new social media competitions promoting prizes from local businesses with the first including a meal for two at Zaap Thai which is now running on the #LoveYork hub. A fun virtual #LoveYork awards initiative for businesses to take part in will also be launched in the coming weeks – with more details to follow.

Alongside this there will also be a special celebration of York’s’ local music venues with activity in support of Independent Venues Week (25th -31st Jan 2021) – a 7-day celebration of music venues around the country. This year the focus will be on digital content both pre-recorded and live and streaming industry insider chats. More details of this year’s programme will be announced shortly and for further information about the campaign visit www.independentvenueweek.com and the individual venues website for details of their upcoming shows.

Sean Bullick, Managing Director of Make It York said, “Our new #LoveYork campaign is all about celebrating the city and the innovative and creative businesses that we have in York – from world class attractions and independent retailers, to music venues and an eclectic hospitality industry.

This week, we’ve launched a new virtual market promoting some of York’s best independent businesses, and a new family-focused online hub to help keep the kids entertained during lockdown, with fun content from the city’s attractions. In plan, we also have a series of competitions, online awards and social media content designed to keep York front of mind during the lockdown and champion the wonderful businesses we have in the city. We are incredibly proud of what the city has to offer and we are looking forward to sharing our #LoveYork campaign with residents and virtual visitors over the coming weeks.”

Meet the Shambles Market Trader: Wigginton Road Nurseries

A family-run business since 1976, Wigginton Road Nurseries is run by brothers, Gary and Andrew – specialising in a wide range of high-quality cut flowers and plants.

With a base on Shambles Market for many years, the Wigginton Road Nurseries stall located on Jubbergate has always offered a year-round selection of the very best seasonal flowers and plants. Hand-picked in Holland, the stall offers a fantastic range of fresh flowers, providing customers with some of the more unusual and unique options not available in supermarkets.

During lockdown the brothers have been busy with a bespoke delivery service – driving across York to deliver fresh flowers direct to people’s homes and bring some much-needed positivity and cheer!

Gary said: “It has been wonderful to see how people have been really getting behind local businesses and the support we’ve had with our flower delivery service over the last week has been absolutely superb. Customers have said it really helps to brighten their day, and how lovely it is to have a local delivery service like this, especially during lockdown.

“With our stock being purchased direct from Dutch wholesalers, the fresh flowers and plants are auctioned every day and prices will of course fluctuate with supply and demand. Over the coming weeks stock levels may also be limited by what we are able to get from our suppliers – however, we are keen to do everything we can to continue to provide this service where possible. When lockdown is over, this may continue to be something we offer our customers, along with the option to order for weddings and events.

“We’ve been on Shambles Market for a long time and seen many changes and improvements in recent years. Being part of the Shambles Market community is great – seeing new traders coming in and developments like the introduction of the Food Court has been really positive and people seem to really love the shopping experience and supporting their local traders.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to all our customers past and present for their outstanding support – it really is appreciated, and we look forward to returning to our stall when lockdown is over and seeing everyone again!”

Make It York: COVID-19 Update and Response to National Lockdown Measures

Following the latest Government advice and announcement of new national lockdown restrictions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, Make It York will be implementing a number of measures to ensure the continued safety of our staff, residents, Shambles Market traders and visitors at this time and to comply with the latest advice given:

  • The Make It York team continue to be in regular contact with members, traders and other key stakeholders across the city to provide ongoing updates as and when they become available. The team are continuing with remote working, as previously, and are contactable by email. We continue to provide support to members and businesses across the city and all enquiries regarding the business support available can be emailed through to business@makeityork.com  and any Visit York membership queries can be sent to membership@makeityork.com

  • The Visitor Information Centre has temporarily closed until further notice. An email service will still be available to customers via info@visityork.org and the visityork.org website will continue to be updated with the latest information.
  • From today (5th January 2021) Shambles Market will be open for traders of essential goods only until further notice.  All traders have been contacted by the team with further details and the york-markets@makeityork.com email will continue to be monitored during this time for any queries. A member of the Markets Team will also be on site when the market is open and trading. All the latest information on Shambles Market Traders will be updated here
  • The Make It York events which are held each year in January and February – York Residents Festival and the York Ice Trail – will be unable to go ahead in 2021 due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions and the need to keep the city centre space safe for all. To continue to support businesses during this time, a new #LoveYork campaign is set to launch this January to celebrate York’s unique offer and the array of independent businesses, attractions and retailers in the city. The campaign will promote a ‘shop local’ message and will aim to inspire people to return to the city when it is safe to do so. Further details on this and how businesses can get involved will follow shortly.

  • We continue to support businesses across the city through the promotion of the ‘York at Home’ hub – featuring inspirational content to allow people to virtually experience what the city has on offer, and through our online food and drink and shopping hubs showcasing restaurants and venues offering takeaway and / or delivery and online delivery options for retailers. We will have more new initiatives to support businesses during lockdown coming soon too – watch this space.

Sean Bullick, Managing Director at Make It York, said: “These new national lockdown restrictions will undoubtedly create significant challenges for businesses across all sectors in the city, however Make It York continue to support businesses and provide guidance throughout this period of unprecedented uncertainty, alongside our partners at City of York Council and York BID.

“Whilst we’re disappointed that we are moving back into tighter national measures and will be unable to hold our traditional Residents Festival and Ice Trail events next year, safety has to be absolutely paramount.  Plans are already underway to bring both of these popular events back to the city in 2022 – bigger and better than ever – and work is going on behind the scenes on a new and exciting #LoveYork campaign to celebrate our unique city and the incredible diversity of York’s businesses.

“The safety of our staff, residents, visitors and traders is of paramount importance and whilst this is an immensely difficult time for all, it’s vital we all work together to support our local businesses and ensure York is in the best place to recover and build back better. York has such a strong foundation upon which to build, and whilst there will no doubt be challenges ahead, we remain optimistic about 2021 and the positive opportunities that are on the horizon for our city if we continue to innovate and work closely together.

“We’d like to thank all our members, partners and traders in advance for their continued support and understanding once again during this challenging time.”

Make It York partners with TXGB and Rugby League World Cup 2021 on launch of new booking platform

In partnership with Make It York, Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021) and TXGB (Tourism Exchange Great Britain), a new digital booking platform ‘Squad Trips’ has this week gone live for York’s tourism businesses to connect to fans of the tournament.

Now live at york.rlwc2021.com/ fans will be able to purchase their Squad Trip for all of the York Rugby League World Cup games alongside offers from local tourism and hospitality businesses including hotel stays, day trips and York Pass cards.

‘Squad Trips’ provides fans with a one-stop platform allowing one easy place to book their RLWC2021 experience including match tickets, accommodation and activities. The digital platform supports all businesses across the tourism sector, celebrating the diversity of the industry by being accessible to businesses of all sizes – aiming to grow the value and volume of tourism in England.

‘Squad Trips’ shows live availability, pricing and content to fans, whilst providing suppliers with sales data to analyse trends, grow their business and access new markets and customers. Tourism suppliers interested in becoming part of the York ‘Squad Trips’ page by offering their accommodation, activity or attraction to fans should contact membership@makeityork.com. There is no fee to join ‘Squad Trips’, with only commissions and booking fees payable.

TXGB was developed in partnership with VisitEngland in 2019, with technology partners Rainmaker and V3, to address the fragmented tourism distribution landscape. It allows tourism businesses to broaden their distribution and allows distributors access to a wide range of bookable product. The collaboration with RLWC2021 is the first dedicated channel within TXGB for a large scale sports event.

Jonathan Neill, RLWC2021 Commercial Director said: “Squad Trips provides an efficient and valuable platform to the thousands of fans wanting to attend matches at Rugby League World Cup 2021, whilst also supporting and celebrating the tourism sector in our host towns and cities.

“We want to play a part in the recovery of the sector moving forward, provide positive social impacts within our communities, and help drive tourism across England. With over 80% of RLWC2021 matches being played in the Northern Powerhouse, ‘Squad Trips’ will help drive value and volume across the country and create memorable experiences and engagement for our fans.”

James Berzins, TXGB Director said: “We’re delighted to support RLWC2021 in their mission to maximise the impact that the tournament has on the local visitor economies, within each of the host destinations. This fits well with our purpose, to unlock the full potential of the tourism sector.

“The “Squad Trips” channel will help suppliers generate business in the run up and during the tournament and it will also leave a lasting legacy of digitally enabled and distributed tourism products in the regions of England.

“TXGB has provided the technical infrastructure to make this innovative approach to fan travel a reality, and we should also applaud the forward thinking of RLWC2021 and the hard work that the host regions are putting in to engage businesses.”

Helen Apsey, Head of Marketing and Communications at Make It York said, “This is a great opportunity for the city’s tourism and hospitality businesses to promote their business to Rugby League World Cup fans across the world – who are already looking to book their trip to York next year. Accessible to businesses of all sizes across the city, the platform allows for a broader distribution of the wonderful accommodation, tours and experiences we have in York, and allows for those businesses to engage with new markets and grow.”

The ‘Squad Trips’ platform can be viewed via: http://york.rlwc2021.com/

Fans who wish to purchase official match tickets, will also have to purchase at least one other accommodation or activities product on ‘Squad Trips’. Fans who have already secured their match tickets to RLWC2021 can also use the platform to book accommodation and activities.

Make It York secures City of York Council investment

Following the outcome of the City of York Council Executive meeting yesterday evening (15th December 2020), it has been confirmed that an investment package will be put in place to secure the future of Make It York and their continued role in supporting York’s economic growth and recovery.

The decision places Make It York in a strong position to continue to deliver on key areas including tourism, inward investment, business support, culture, events and city centre management and play an important role in helping York to recover from the current crisis and build back better.

Sean Bullick, Managing Director at Make It York said:

“We are very appreciative of this support from City of York Council, and for the wider backing we have received from right across the city’s business community. Without a doubt, 2020 has been a challenging year and not what anyone could have anticipated – however we are very optimistic about 2021 and the future for York’s recovery and economic growth. York has such a strong foundation upon which to build, and the opportunity there for our city is huge.

Our focus now must be recovering our established economies and working together to build the prosperous future we all want to see for our city. With the calibre of Make It York’s Board of Directors and the expert team we have in place, I strongly believe that we can make a significant and unique contribution to economic growth and recovery in the city. We will continue to work closely with partners across the city to achieve this – from local businesses and City of York Council to York’s Universities and key organisations such as York BID and the region’s Local Enterprise Partnerships.

On a personal level I’d like to thank all our staff who have continued to work incredibly hard during this difficult period and all our members and partners across the city who have shown their continued support. Working together closely is the key to the success of York’s recovery in 2021, and through collaboration and strong partnerships we can build back better and come out of this positively as a city.”

Since the pandemic started, the organisation has directly supported over 700 businesses in the city, holding 39 roundtables across 13 sectors with organisations from start-ups to major businesses, to understand business needs, develop provision and lobby for resources at the highest levels with central government. In the last three years, Make It York’s Growth

Managers have supported 322 companies in York to access £1,498,589 in grants from the Leeds City Region alone.

In addition to a critical business support function, Make It York have delivered on a series of high-profile events this year to support local businesses and to raise York’s profile – including York Business Week, Roadmap to Recovery at the Festival of Ideas, York’s Creative Future to launch the city’s new Culture Strategy, and the Visit York Tourism Awards. A further key part of Make It York’s role is to lead on the Tourism Marketing Recovery Strategy alongside City of York Council, marketing York as a welcoming destination to residents and visitors and delivering on initiatives such as York’s first ever virtual Christmas Market to bring the magic of York into people’s homes and rolling out a safe and welcoming city-centre Christmas offer.

Following the news earlier this month that Make It York had requested investment from City of York Council, business leaders from across the city came out in support of the work the organisation has been carrying out.

Jon Flatman, Chairman of York City Knights said:

“We have worked in partnership with Make It York on a number of projects and initiatives over the recent months, including the Rugby League World Cup, and have been impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment that the team have shown, by their new methods of working and the reality of connecting with businesses and people to make a difference, particularly through this difficult time.

“We know that Make It York have been working incredibly hard to develop a robust plan for recovery in the city – taking an agile approach to incorporate changing Government guidance and feedback from local businesses. Their focus has very much been on helping the city to bounce back and supporting businesses to recover from the impact of the pandemic.”

Richard Wood, York Businessman said:

“I have worked with Make It York on a number of issues, including our really exciting, current Roman Quarter development. In my experience, they do a great job and have a vital role to play in raising York’s profile and attracting the sort of investment we need to help grow and diversify our economy.”

David Kerfoot MBE DL Chair, York and North Yorkshire LEP said:

“With devolution, and all the economic opportunities it presents, Make It York’s expertise and networks will be vital in ensuring we maximise the potential by pulling together all the different interests across the city.”

Johnny Hayes, Chairman of Indie York said: “Make It York understands the importance of independent businesses to York and have always been supportive of our work. I think their reach and ability to promote York is important. The pandemic has been difficult for all concerned with the high Street and MIY are no exception in being affected by those pressures.”
