Haunted York Ghost Hunt at Shambles Market
York is as haunted as ever, and an intervention is needed! From Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November, visitors can take part in a self-guided Ghost Hunt at Shambles Market.
Ghosts will be hiding among the market stalls throughout Halloween half-term, challenging visitors to find them all as they explore the market.
Make sure not to miss any ghosts by picking up a checklist of all the ghosts to find from the Visit York Visitor Information Centre at 28 Back Swinegate, open every day.
After completing the hunt, head to Shambles Food Court to enjoy street food and take a break for a much-deserved rest and recover from the ghost-hunting adventures.

On Wednesday 28 October, from 7.30pm to 10pm, Shambles Market will open after dark for an exclusive Night Market.
The Halloween-themed evening will showcase handcrafted goods from local traders and Yorkshire businesses, alongside street food and warm drinks.
Visitors can shop, eat and soak up the atmospheric surroundings of York after dark, with the market taking on a suitably spooky Halloween feel.

Up to 12 young traders aged between 16 and 30 will take part, competing for the opportunity to progress to the 2026 regional final. The competition forms part of the NMTF Young Traders Market programme, a national initiative designed to encourage and discover the next generation of market traders and business owners.

Performed by local communities, the York Mystery Plays are a theatrical spectacle. In 700 AD, Saxon-populated York drafted its first market charter. This gave York the right to hold a market in a specific place and upon particular days of the week. York’s market charter remained intact throughout its Viking invasion in 837 AD and the Harrying of the North by the Normans in 1069 and continues today.
Through the years, York became home to many markets for different products scattered around the city. In 1837, a single market site was created on Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, staying in this position for 127 years. In 1964, Newgate Market was specially created behind the buildings on Shambles and Parliament Street and remains the site of the market today.
After a refurbishment in 2014 the renamed Shambles Market underwent a transformation. Shambles Market now accommodates 69 covered stalls, an impressive food court and a place for many local and independent businesses to start-up, grow and develop. The Market is a modern retail success story.

In addition, the River Art Market will be taking place over the weekend of 2 and 3 August. In this unique art and design market, set along the stunning River Ouse along Dame Judi Dench Walk, you can explore artists and their work from all over Yorkshire and beyond.

Offering the traditional British seaside fish and chips, there’s also delicious bagels and Kreps, and global favourites including Middle Eastern and Thai cuisines. On Bank Holiday Monday, 26 May, the Magical Night Market transformed York’s iconic Shambles Market into a bustling hub of enchantment, bursting with street food, artisan crafts, and spellbinding entertainment. Hundreds of visitors braved the weather to immerse themselves in a wizardry-themed evening that blended culture, creativity, and community spirit.
Hosted by Make It York and part of WizardFest, the event invited families and fans of all ages to wander through over 30 local traders – offering everything from handcrafted treasures to delicious culinary delights, all under the canopy of magic.
Adding to the weekend’s enchantment was WizardFest, a family-friendly spectacular running from 24 to 26 May, supported by Make It York and led by the acclaimed Wizard Walk of York. Making its debut in the city, the festival brought spell craft, storytelling, and a host of magical moments to the streets – drawing crowds and sparking imaginations.

The York Christmas Market takes great pride in being predominantly local, with 80% being Yorkshire based businesses offering food and drink, artisan products and thoughtful gifts. In addition, sustainable traders were prioritized who are committed to ethical practices, using eco-friendly materials, and supporting fair standards.

All Christmas Market traders are offering an exclusive 10% discount resident offer- just present a valid York Card or identity card that proves York residency (if presenting an identity card, this must clearly state ‘York’, e.g. driving licence or older person’s bus pass).
Useful information
The York Christmas Market is a welcoming and inclusive experience for everyone. To enjoy the festivities with ease and comfort that’s individual for all; special measures have been put in place and useful information can be found online. This includes getting around by bus, quiet time (10am-12pm daily) so visitors can be assured a music-free period, a ‘quiet oasis’ at St Sampson’s Centre, access to more toilet facilities, and a trader map to locate stalls and plan ahead.
Getting around
Getting in and around York by public transport is the easiest and most hassle-free way for a day out. York’s local bus services are the most efficient way to travel within the city, and you can plan ahead at iTravel York. In addition, with York Park & Ride you can park securely for free at one of six sites around the city and catch one of the frequent electric buses into the city centre.
