Make It York reveals the positive value of tourism in York with results reaffirming York’s position as a leading destination for both domestic and international travellers.

The keynote speaker, Tom Riordan CBE, the Government Envoy for the Northern Growth Corridor, spoke about “Accelerating Growth in the North”. Tom’s role involves working collaboratively across government departments, with mayors, local authorities and other external partners, with the aim of co-developing a plan to support growth, connectivity and investment across the North in line with key government priorities.
Katerina Rysova, Senior Insights Manager at VisitBritain highlighted the industry’s tourism insights and data. Reported consumer travel trends include a growing focus on sustainability, reflected in increased interest in off-season travel and low-impact transport options. Travellers are also seeking more personalised itineraries and tailored experiences, alongside trips designed to support mental wellbeing and overall wellness. Authenticity remains a key driver of travel decisions, including the continued rise of screen tourism (visiting film and television locations) as well as a desire for genuine human connection through high-quality interactions and engagement. At the same time, technology continues to play a central role, with more travellers using AI to plan trips, seek advice and optimise their itineraries.
The day’s presentations were followed by a panel discussion where Sarah Loftus and Katerina Rysova, were joined by Charlotte Watson, Chair of Indie York, and Cherie Federico, Director of Aesthetica. The session was chaired by Dr Brendan Paddison, Chair of the York Tourism Advisory Board, and explored key themes including the importance of collaboration.
These initiatives include Make It York working year-round with Indie York, which celebrated it’s 10th anniversary, explaining how it began as a way for small businesses to come together to showcase York’s independent offer and reinforce the message that the city is open. The Indie York map is available from the Visit York Visitor Information Centre.
The discussion then turned to future opportunities for York. Sarah emphasised that the city cannot rely on the assumption that people will simply come, York must actively promote itself. She stressed the importance of being innovative and standing out from competing cities, for example by promoting York as the most haunted city in England and maintaining the “open for business” message even when the river levels are high, to show that the city remains open and welcoming.
Cherie highlighted the need to better leverage York’s cultural capital, noting that culture and tourism are closely linked. She said that York’s UNESCO City of Media Arts designation plays a critical role in the city’s story, presenting York as an innovative and forward-thinking place where history sits alongside contemporary creativity.
Katerina referred to VisitBritain’s Starring campaign, which highlights film and television locations, describing it as one of the most successful and engaging campaigns, generating more than £200 million for the UK and reinforcing Cherie’s point about the importance of screen tourism.
Looking ahead to 2026, there is much to anticipate, including the Eggsplore York trail focusing on ceramic arts, which will draw visitors to independent businesses across the city; the UNESCO City of Media Arts EXPO showcasing York’s creative sector; the Aesthetica Film Festival which attracts thousands of visitors from around the world; and the 20th anniversary of the Aesthetica Art Prize. Sarah concluded by reiterating the importance of continuously promoting York and keeping it firmly positioned as a top, must-see destination.
Closing remarks were delivered by Mark Mattinson, Chair of the Make It York Members’ Advisory Board and General Manager of York Dungeon. Mark also noted that the day’s speakers consistently emphasised the importance of collaboration, not only within the city but also with regional partners, including North Yorkshire and Leeds.
Mark reflected on the evolution of tourism in York, using York Dungeon’s 40th anniversary as a lens through which to consider how the visitor experience has changed since 1986. He highlighted how tourism in the city has transformed over that period and outlined the collective actions needed to safeguard its future, including stronger collaboration and partnership working to nurture the city, as well as continued engagement with initiatives such as the York Members’ Advisory Board and Qa Research barometers to ensure York remains accessible, inclusive and welcoming to visitors.

[ASFF19, Aesthetica Short Film Festival 2019, York, Jim Poyner Photography]
This November, Aesthetica will host one of the most significant screen industry gatherings of the year. As part of the 15th anniversary of the BAFTA-Qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival, the UK Film Production Summit will take place at The Grand, York on 6 November 2025, bringing together more than 100 of the UK’s leading production companies, development executives and commissioners under one roof.
The scale is unprecedented. The intent is clear. Aesthetica becomes the beating heart of British film and television, as the country’s most influential decision-makers converge to debate, define and decide the future of screen content.
At the centre of the Summit is a landmark keynote session, The Future of Production: Scripted, Unscripted, Film, TV & Streaming, chaired by Ridley Scott Associates. Against a backdrop of rapid technological change, globalised distribution, and shifting audience behaviours, this discussion addresses how UK companies can remain competitive while continuing to champion distinctive, original voices. Panellists also include the New York Times, Paramount and Channel 5 amongst others.
Mark Herbert, CEO of Warp Films, headlines the Summit. One of the UK’s most important independent producers, Herbert’s credits include This Is England, Four Lions, Submarine, and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. In 2025, Warp’s Adolescence took home top honours at the Edinburgh TV Festival, reaffirming the company’s reputation for bold, uncompromising storytelling. His appearance in York signals the weight of the conversations taking place.
Mark Herbert, CEO of Warp Films, says: “I’m delighted to be part of this year’s Aesthetica Film Festival and to lead one of the headline sessions reflecting on Warp’s journey. It’s a fantastic opportunity to come together with peers from across the industry to reflect on where we are, share ideas, and engage in important conversations about the future of storytelling.”
The guest list reads like a roll call of the British screen industry’s biggest players, with representatives from BBC Films, Film4, Working Title, Paramount, Clerkenwell (Baby Reindeer), Warp Films, Netflix, and Amazon Studios all expected to attend. The Summit’s sessions will tackle urgent questions:
How will AI and virtual production transform the industry?
What does the rise of streamers mean for UK broadcasters and independents?
How can British producers balance commercial pressures with creative risk-taking?
Where will the money come from?
These are not abstract questions. They determine whether the next generation of British talent can thrive, whether the UK retains its reputation as a storytelling powerhouse, and whether audiences continue to see fresh, bold work on screen.
Cherie Federico, Festival Director, says:
“The UK Film Production Summit is about scale, ambition and intent. Bringing together 150 companies in one space is unprecedented. This isn’t just another industry event – it’s where the future of UK production is being defined. York has the privilege of hosting, but the significance is national. The conversations will shape what gets made, how it gets made, and where British storytelling goes next.”
The choice of York is also telling. Once considered peripheral to the industry’s traditional hubs, the city has positioned itself as a centre for creativity and innovation, with Aesthetica acting as a catalyst. By hosting an event of this scale and seriousness, York reinforces its role as a meeting point for the future of British creative industries.
For five days in November, all roads lead to York. When the doors close, the conversations begun here will ripple outward across the UK’s film, television, and streaming landscape for years to come.

UNESCO Creative City & Next-Gen Talent
York’s status as a UNESCO City of Media Arts shines through ASFF’s EXPO, showcasing cutting-edge digital media and design. The festival also invests in the future, with workshops for children aged 7–14 in filmmaking, stop-motion animation, and coding — inspiring the next generation of creators.
The Aesthetica Fringe
Playful, unexpected, and free to discover. Across York, the Fringe fills spaces with installations, pop-up exhibitions, printmaking sessions, and sound art, ensuring the festival’s creative spirit extends well beyond traditional venues.
A Meeting Point for the Industry
For professionals, the UK Film Production Summit at The Grand (6–7 November) is a national event of serious significance, bringing together 150 leading production companies including BBC Films, Film4, Working Title, Paramount, Clerkenwell (Baby Reindeer), Warp Films (Adolescence) and more. With commissioners and investors in attendance, this is where future-defining projects and collaborations are forged.
Beyond a Festival: Aesthetica’s National & International Impact
ASFF is part of a wider cultural ecosystem driven by Aesthetica Magazine, one of the UK’s leading publications in art and design, distributed worldwide.
Alongside the Aesthetica Art Prize, which attracts thousands of entries annually from international artists, and its ongoing work in sector development, Aesthetica has become a platform of influence and ambition. By situating York at the centre of this national conversation, the festival is redefining the UK’s creative geography and setting a new benchmark for what a cultural event can be.
A Festival for Everyone
Ultimately, Aesthetica is about more than films – it is about York coming alive as the UK’s leading media arts city. Residents, visitors, students, families and industry alike are invited to explore, discover and participate in an inclusive celebration of creativity.
