Congratulations to the York businesses who have been nominated for Yorkshire Choice Awards. They will find out at the event on 6th April if they have been successful so good luck from the team at Make It York.
Here’s the view from one of the nominees, Lindsay Coldrick.
In April 2017 I did something most people will never do. I went to a party by myself. This wasn’t just any party though. This was the Yorkshire Choice Awards 2018. I had been in business for less than a year and had been nominated for Independent Business of the Year Award 2018. I was supposed to be going with a friend, but unfortunately her Uncle passed away a few days before. I couldn’t not go. I walked in, grabbed a glass of champers and tried to see if I could see anyone I recognised. I knew, via FB, Gemma Stow, who was also up for an award and Nicky Hayer, from Nima, who I had met once in person. I also recognised a chap whose workshop I had been on a few months earlier. I stood and hovered around him before saying hi. He looked and asked ‘Do I know you?’ Erm sort of, I replied, I came on one of your workshops last year. You’re one of the only people I know in he room so thought I’d say hi! Hi, he said. It was Richard McCann, motivational speaker. I found my table and sat down. Everyone else had come as a couple, but they involved me in conversation and I met some lovely people. I love talking to people anyway and had a fabulous evening.
When the Awards came up again for 2019, I thought, I don’t want to go by myself again so I thought of those who had supported and inspired me over the year. I nominated Tracy Burleigh for Business Woman of the Year. She set up the FB group York Women Mean Business. I asked her for an awards ceremony, which she did and pulled off. There are now more than 2000 of us in her group. We network. We meet for coffee. We collaborate and connect.
Emma and Simon from Indigo Greens set up their own estate agency, minus an office. They wear bright yellow and green hoodies. They gave away candy canes at Xmas and free pens. They have fun whilst doing their jobs. They smash SM as estate agents! I nominated them for customer service as their reviews are awesome!
I met Catherine Adamson a few times via networking. She wanted to raise £10,000 for charity and she did it. She posted videos of her camping, we followed her journey. Her passion was amazing. I voted for her as local fundraiser of the year.
Then last but not least I voted for John McGall as Inspirational Individual of the Year. I emt John and Julie back in 2017, when I was first starting my business. I had read about their business, Iamreuseable in a local newspaper and felt I needed to meet them. The passion for their business shone through. Since that first meeting I have got to know John quite well. He does an immense amount of work for charities in York, particularly with the homeless. He basically accepts charity donations and allocates them to charities. Not only that but him and Julie collect leftover ‘stuff’ from hotels to allocate to those in need, be it toiletries or clothes. They find and donate stuff to the hospitals eg toothpaste, toothbrushes for those who come in and have nothing. John does all this whilst going through some tough health issues with his own heart. He has been in and out of hospital. He never grumbles and always has a smile on his face.
My business, NRG Healing Ltd was initially started following my divorce. I was going to offer Reiki and crystal healing to people. I somehow got into selling Himalayan salt products and as business does it has changed again. I teach Reiki and run workshops on crystals and law of attraction/vision boards. I do Angel Card/Tarot Card readings. I do spiritual readings, where I get messages from loved ones who have passed. I offer Reiki/Crystal Healing and Access Bars treatments. I wrote a book, A Gentle Hug for the Soul, to give people tools to help them through stressful periods in their lives. Everything I do is to help and support people on their journey.
This year I won’t be going alone to the awards ceremony as I will have these fabulous people who have truly inspired and supported me.
There are other York businesses in the Yorkshire Choice Awards that I didn’t nominate but who are also in it. These are Lisa Byrne, Breast Friends, Edgar Andrews, Nima, Agatha Meehan
