VETPARTNERS’ ACQUISITION NAMED DEAL OF THE MONTH
The acquisition of York-headquartered VetPartners by private equity firm BC Partners has been named as Insider’s August Deal of the Month. The company was founded in 2015 and provides services to pets, equine and production animals. It owns more than 310 clinics across the UK and has added an average of 80 clinics annually over the past three years. It generated revenues of more than £250m in the year to June 2018.
ANIMALCARE SELLS WHOLESALE DIVISION
York-based veterinary medicines supplier Animalcare Group has sold its wholesale business to Vetdis Holding, a private company based in Belgium for a fee that could rise to £2.65m.
PERIOD OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT FOR OPTIBIOTIX
York-based life sciences business OptiBiotix Health has hailed a “period of growth and development” in its half-year results. During the first half of its financial year, the listed company secured number of agreements, including a US manufacturing, supply and profit sharing agreement with Cereal Ingredients for its SlimBiome product and an exclusive royalty bearing agreement with Fine Foods and Pharmaceuticals for the production and supply of five formulations containing OptiBiotix’s strain in Europe.
PAIR OF DEALS AT ESCRICK BUSINESS PARK
Two companies have agreed a deal for units at developer S Harrison’s Escrick Business Park in York.
DG Dale & Son has acquired Escrick Business Park’s final warehouse unit, which measures 1,860 sq ft, for a new paint and body shop. The company, run by brothers Nick and James Dale, relocated from Crockey Hill to Escrick Business Park in 2014, initially leasing two units covering 4,850 sq ft in total. It now occupies almost 9,000 sq ft of warehouse space at the business park.
S HARRISON COMPLETES YORK STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
S Harrison has completed work on a new development of more than 100 student flats in York.
The three- and four-storey development on Percy’s Lane comprises self-contained townhouses with their own front doors, with communal facilities including study spaces, gym, cinema room, games room and courtyard. There is also a wide range of en-suite apartments available.
VETPARTNERS ACQUIRES EQUINE PRACTICES
The group has acquired Liphook Equine Hospital in Liphook, Hampshire, and Rainbow Equine Hospital in Malton, North Yorkshire. The deals will support the company’s expansion in the equine sector. Former Minster Vets director Julian Rishworth has been appointed as VetPartners head of equine and the group has established a graduate development programme for its equine division.
FURTHER GROWTH FOR FLEET COMPANY
Autohorn Fleet Services has reported an increase in turnover and pre-tax profit in its latest results, with plans in place to support further growth. It now runs a fleet of more than 2,000 cars, serving business and individuals across the UK. Recently filed accounts show turnover of £28.6m was achieved in the year ending 31 December 2017, up from £27m in 2016. The 2016 results also included £3m from the disposal of a waste management business. Pre-tax profit increased to £1.8m from £1.5m the previous year.
YORK CENTRAL PLANS SUBMITTED
The proposed York Central development, which could support the creation of 6,500 jobs, has moved forward with the submission of a planning application for the project. The masterplan aims to transform an underused part of the city centre, creating new residential, cultural and business neighbourhoods in the heart of York. Once complete it is expected to increase the size of the city’s economy by more than 20 per cent and create about 6,500 jobs.

£2.4M DEAL FOR YORK RETAIL UNIT
A high street retail unit in York occupied by fashion brand Jack Wills has been acquired for £2.4m by Greenridge investment Management. The double frontage 3,890 sq ft unit at 18-20 Stonegate spans four floors. The property is let to Jack Wills on a full repairing and insuring lease until January 2026 at a passing rent of £115,000 per annum.
YORK APARTMENT SCHEME SET FOR GO-AHEAD
Plans for a five-storey apartment block on the site of a commercial unit in York are set to get the green light later this week. The application covers the redevelopment of the Quickslide Windows Direct site on Redeness Street. It proposes the demolition of the existing unit and construction of a five-storey building featuring eight one-bedroom and 24 two-bedroom flats.
NEW OWNER FOR YORK ESTATE AGENCY
A York estate agency business has been acquired from its founders. Edward Hartshorne completed his purchase of Blenkin & Co and will take over formal control from founders Tim and Claire Blenkin. Hartshorne said: “Blenkin & Co has established a niche selling country and town houses, farms and Estates, and this will continue. However, as the business evolves so must we. My plan is to open up new ways of interacting with clients and make further inroads into normalising communication outside traditional office hours.
BRICK MAKER SUPPORTS LANDMARK YORK RENOVATION PROJECT
The York Handmade Brick Company has supplied bricks to support the restoration of one of York’s Georgian townhouses to its former glory. The company, which is based at Alne, near Easingwold, provided bespoke handmade bricks for 14 Lendal, home of the House of Trembling Madness bar.
YORK OPENING FOR FLOORING SUPERSTORE
Flooring Superstore has opened a new outlet at Monks Cross Shopping Park in York following a £100,000 investment. The new store is the fifth for the retailer in the UK in 2018, following openings in Swindon, Newport, Keighley and Edinburgh, with more to follow later this year.

550-HOME HOUSING PROPOSALS PUT FORWARD
Proposals have been put forward for City of York Council to develop about 550 new homes over a five-year period. A report, due to go before the authority’s executive next week, proposes that new affordable housing in built on council-owned sites. About 40% of the new properties would be targeted to support those who currently struggle to get on the housing market, and will meet the needs of a wide range of residents, including key workers and first time buyers.

Rockspring Property Investment Managers has acquired a York hotel as part of a wider £54m deal. The company has acquired a 148 bed Holiday Inn hotel in York City Centre for about £15m from Quidnet Capital and Colony North Star.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is promoting 68 UK investment projects worth more than £30 billion to overseas investors. The six Yorkshire projects featured include York Central and will also be promoted through a revamped online one-stop shop: invest.great.gov.uk.

The project, which has seen a retail and food hub created from shipping containers on vacant land in Piccadilly, was supported by capital from the Business Enterprise Fund (BEF). The three £50,000 loans, were used for building works and pulling the site together which is now home to 23 independent businesses.

A Veterinary hospital has invested in new equipment and facilities as part of a £325,000 renovation project. A new waiting room, extra consulting rooms, a dental suits and revamped wards have been built at the Minster Veterinary Practice on Salisbury Road.
Castlegate – Domestic – Regeneration
The council’s ruling executive approved an initial £2.4 million investment to start working on planning applications for a new multi-storey car park on St George’s Field, a public square and open space around Clifford’s Tower, and new buildings on the back of Coppergate and the old Reynard’s site at 17-21 Piccadilly.

Brew York raised £40,000 through crowdfunding to extend the tap room and develop a street food court.
Gladman Developments – Domestic – Residential
Gladman Developments has submitted an outline application for development of an 18.7-acre plot of land off Tadcaster Road in Copmanthorpe. The proposal covers the development of up 160 residential properties, with a variety of house types and sizes. A 30 per cent affordable housing provision is included.
Falcon Tap Pub – Domestic – Hotel
The four-storey pub occupies a prominent position fronting Micklegate which lies on the western edge of the River Ouse in York. Following the acquisition, the pub will be retained with planning granted for external
alterations. The remaining site will be converted into an aparthotel with planning granted for the renovation of the upper floors to form two apartments, and construction of two residential blocks to the rear to create nine apartments.

More than 400 homes could be built on a piece of land to the west of the former Nestle factory buildings in York if newly-submitted plans get the green light. The Alne-based company created special bricks called Autumn Sunset and London Stock for the two projects at London Bridge Place and London Bridge Station. The contracts were worth £250,000.

Support services and construction group Interserve has completed its latest project for the University of York. The £27m Piazza Learning Centre, which was designed by architects Race Cottam Associates and project managed by Faithful and Gould, is a key element in the university’s development plan for Campus East.

Funding has been secured for a new cinema and retail scheme at the Vangarde development in York. Legal & General is to fund Wrenbridge Sport and the City of York Council’s development of the Vangarde leisure scheme at Vangarde Way, Monks Cross, York. Totalling £35m, L&G’s investment, on behalf of its Leisure Fund, will build a new 13-screen IMAX 50,000 sq ft cinema which has been pre-let to Cineworld, as well as various restaurants and retail units.

Muddy Boots Nursery has relocated into a new purpose-built facility in York after securing a six-figure funding package from HSBC. After acquiring a £795k commercial loan from HSBC, the nursery was able to invest in building a new £1.3m site at Boroughbridge Road. As a result of moving into a new facility, the business expects to recruit eight new staff members over the next 12 months.

Hotel 53 on York’s Piccadilly has been sold to London-based hotel management firm Axcel Group off a guide price of £13m. It will form part of the groups hotel portfolio which includes the Mercure Edinburgh Haymarket Hotel and AC Marriott Manchester.
York-headquartered modular building manufacturer Portakabin has posted turnover and profit growth in its latest set of accounts. In the 12 months to 31 December 2016, Portakabin has experienced continued growth with annualised increases in both turnover (£300.3m) and proﬁt before tax (£38.2m).

One of York’s most recognisable buildings is to be regenerated into a residential mixed-use development that will retain its famous frontage. Steamrock Capital and Wetherby-based Oakgate Group have worked together on plans to redevelop the Banana Warehouse on Piccadilly. The plans will see the historic and iconic façade of Banana Warehouse retained and a new three to five-storey building constructed behind the feature, housing 49 apartments, retail units on the ground floor and parking.

The latest phase of the five star hotel’s £15m expansion has been unveiled. The 130-cover restaurant will become part of a £15m expansion project which will also see the addition of 101 bedrooms when a new accommodation wing opens later this year. Online retailer gear4Music has had a record year, and is expanding with a £5.3m HQ acquisition on the back of it. Revenues reached £56.1m for the York-based business in the year to February 2017, up 58% on the year before. The company made pre-tax profits of £2.3m, compared to a loss of £43,000 in 2016.
